Definition:
Derivative work is based on modified preexisting works to which the copyright owner has the exclusive rights to. The piece of work resulting from derivative work, considered as a whole may be separately copyrightable.
Fair Use
Definition:
This is a statutory exception that allows the use of a copyrighted work for certain purposes without requiring permission. (See 17 USC § 1075).
Patent
Definition:
A patent differs from intellectual property in so far, as patents copyright a person's invention of a product or discovery while intellectual property protects intellectual works and compositions.
